Hydration For Travel: Why ORS Hydration Tablets are an Essential for Every Carry-On

Hydration For Travel: Why ORS Hydration Tablets are an Essential for Every Carry-On

You've packed everyone's passports, all the chargers and adapters, and all the guidebooks and beach books you'll ever need. You feel sorted. But there’s one carry-on essential that’s easy to overlook, that is, until you’re 3 hours into a flight with a throbbing headache and a dry mouth. Travel hydration tablets.

Whether you’re chasing a red-eye, looking to max out on holiday time, or you’re prepping for a long-haul to the other side of the world, staying hydrated can be the difference between landing ready to explore or heading straight to the hotel for a lie down and five carafes of water.

Why Do You Need to Worry About Electrolytes For Flying?

Travel puts your body through much more than you realise. Early starts throw off your body’s natural rhythm before you’ve made it out of the front door, aircraft cabins are notoriously dry, and jumping between climates, cold at home and blazing hot abroad, adds another layer of strain to your body. Then there are things like travel tummy. The effect of unfamiliar cuisine or less-than-trustworthy tap water can disrupt a well-planned holiday programme.

Any of these things can chip away at your hydration levels, leaving you feeling well below your best at a time when you’re supposed to be enjoying yourself. Plan ahead, pack electrolytes for flying.

Can You Take Supplements on a Plane?

Not only can you take supplements on a plane for hydration (they’re not liquids, so they are allowed in your bag), you absolutely should. The morning before a flight is often the perfect storm for a day spent dehydrated. An early alarm, a rushed or completely forgotten breakfast, then out the door and in the car in minutes with no drink. Add some pre-flight stress and that airport coffee-and-beer combo, and you could be dehydrated by the time your gate's announced.

Once you’re in the air, this can get worse. Cabin air is kept at a low humidity, 10–20%, as opposed to the 30–60% we’re used to on the ground. By the time air is pulled from the thin, freezing atmosphere outside, compressed, heated and circulated, there’s very little moisture. Cabin air then pulls moisture from your skin, throat and eyes, and it’s a big reason some people feel so parched, foggy and fatigued while flying.

Plain water helps replace lost fluids, but if you've also lost electrolytes, it won't replace those. This is where travel hydration tablets earn their place in your carry-on. Dissolve in water, sip regularly, and you’ll be replacing the sodium, potassium and chloride that will help your body manage fluid levels, muscle and nerve function.

Travel Hydration

Landing somewhere hot and sunny is half the appeal of a holiday. But higher temperatures mean more sweating, and more sweating means more fluid and electrolyte loss. When you’re somewhere warm, hiking, swimming, sightseeing, out on your feet all day, or even just more than normal, your body’s fluid demands can go up.

Then there’s the food and water question. A change in cuisine, and in some places, less-than-reliable tap water, are big reasons so many holidays get interrupted by upset stomachs. If you’re unlucky enough to have this happen to you, having travel hydration on hand is a big help. Especially if you don’t fancy asking a foreign pharmacy for electrolyte tablets in a language you don’t speak. Play it safe, pack electrolytes in your bag.
