Balancing Fun And Health: Your Summer Wellness Guide

Every season is something to be celebrated and they all have their own individual joys to bring, but the balmy summer months are particularly special, with all that sunshine and warm temperatures giving us ample opportunity to get outside and enjoy lots of lovely fresh air.

But while you’re off out and about having the time of your life, it’s vital that you don’t forget the dangers lurking in the shadows and put measures in place to protect yourself, even as the sun shines down upon you.

The price we have to pay at this time of year is perhaps just being a bit more vigilant with certain aspects of our health than we typically have to be in spring. It’s a balancing act and certainly achievable with just a little bit of planning and forethought.

So, with this in mind, here’s how you can enjoy all the fun of the sun while staying safe at the same time. Happy frolicking!

Prioritise hydration

It’s really easy to forget to maintain fluid intake when you’re enjoying the spoils of summer, but dehydration can take hold pretty quickly if you’re not careful so make sure that you’re drinking between six to eight cups of water each day and staying hydrated throughout the day.

Don’t forget that if you’re already thirsty, then it’s too late… you’re already dehydrated!

If you’re not keen on water, you can supplement your fluids with water-rich food, milk, tea and coffee… and don’t forget to replace any minerals you might have lost through sweat with electrolyte tablets. Available in lemon, blackcurrant and strawberry flavours, you can turn your water into a cocktail in an instant!

Prioritise skincare

Summer health isn’t just about hydration, it’s also about your skin and the hot sun can cause lots of problems if you don’t practise safe sun exposure.

Make sure that you slather yourself in sun cream if you’re out during the hottest time of day, taking shelter in shade wherever you can. Reapply suncream every two hours and cover up with light protective clothes if you want additional protection.

Prioritise sleep

It’s very easy to burn the candle at both ends in summer, with the longer days and shorter nights. Plus the sunshine is often a call to head to the pub, so you might find yourself being a bit more sociable right now… all of which can take its toll on your sleep quality and quantity.

Try to maintain a regular sleep schedule during summer if you can, with routine times for going to bed and waking up.

Use lighter sheets to combat the heat, make sure the room is as dark as possible and aim to spend a few hours in the evening winding down by reading a book, having a bath or listening to music to signal to your body that it’s time to rest.
