HYROX London 2026: Why Electrolyte Balance is Your Secret Weapon
Share
Picture this. You’ve been training hard for 14 weeks, practising and preparing for every part of HYROX; you’ve run, rowed and ski-erged for miles and miles, and you’re as fit as you’ve ever been. And now, the day’s here. You’ve popped your top off (looking good), and you’re about halfway through the circuit. Doing well, but getting slower.
Over 90 minutes in, those 1Ks start to feel like you’re running on fumes. People are slipping on the puddles of sweat you’ve left behind; your head’s hurting, and thoughts and lap times are coming slower. You neck three cups of water in the Rox Zone, but it’s too late. Your body’s dehydrated, and you can’t continue at 100%. You cross the finish line feeling like you could have done better.
How could this have happened? Well, training aside, duration exercises require more preparation. Just like you wouldn’t turn up to a marathon without loading up on carbs, you shouldn’t run a HYROX without a proper hydration plan.
That’s where we can help! In this guide, we’ll go over why proper hydration and an optimised electrolyte balance are your secret weapons to smashing your PB and putting down a time you can be proud of.
HYROX London 2026
Last year, HYROX London made history at the Excel with the largest gathering the world had seen. The HYROX ‘XL’, as it’s come to be known, saw 40,000 athletes hitting the track, and 2026 promises to be even bigger.
The race is always the same. 8 x 1K laps, interspersed between 8 functional workout stations: Ski-erg, sled push, sled pull, burpee broad jumps, rowing, farmers carry, sandbag lunges and wall balls.
It’s a race for everybody, from professional athletes to everyday fitness enthusiasts. Everyone runs the same course and everyone needs to hydrate properly and look after their electrolyte balance, from both long-term training, all the way through to recovery.
What Is Your Electrolyte Balance?
Essentially, it’s keeping the right ratio of minerals (electrolytes) in your body. Responsible for regulating nerve signals, muscle contractions, and hydration levels, electrolytes support normal heart and organ function.
Here are the main electrolytes and what they do:
Sodium & Chloride: help maintain fluid balance and support normal nerve and muscle function. They’re found naturally (as you may have guessed) in salty foods.
Potassium: supports normal heart, nerve, and muscle function. It also helps move nutrients into cells and waste products out of cells.
Magnesium: supports normal nerve and muscle function and contributes to bone health.
Your body will try to keep electrolytes at the optimum ratio. When the ratios are off, either too high or too low, they’ll disrupt bodily functions, potentially causing:
- Confusion and irritability
- Diarrhoea or constipation
- Fatigue
- Headaches
- Irregular or fast heart rate (arrhythmia)
- Muscle cramps, muscle spasms or weakness
- Nausea and vomiting
- Numbness or tingling in limbs, fingers and toes
What Happens To Your Electrolyte Balance During HYROX?
Sweat happens. Your body’s in-built air conditioning system goes into overdrive and you end up losing a lot of your fluids and electrolytes. Sweat losses can range from around 0.5 to 2.0 litres per hour, increasing in hotter conditions and during prolonged exercise.
The average HYROX takes about 90 minutes to complete. Unless you’re pushing for a sub-75-minute time, you need a hydration plan to account for this loss in fluids and electrolytes.
If you don’t, those nasty symptoms above (hopefully not diarrhoea) might affect your time. The most important thing you can do to prevent this is to start your exercise hydrated.
How Electrolyte Supplements Can Get You Hydrated Before HYROX
A lot of athletes actually start exercises dehydrated, negatively affecting both performance and perceived effort. Preloading a sports electrolyte drink is the key to setting off on the right foot, improving performance and hitting that new PB.
The night before: Drink water as normal, but supplement with 2 original electrolyte tablets, dissolved in 200ml of water.
90 minutes before: Dissolve two sport hydration tablets in 500ml of water and top up before the start line.
Our O.R.S Sport Hydration tablets are formulated with added minerals, magnesium and vitamin D to reduce tiredness and fatigue, and support muscle function before, during and after sport.
Make sure to test this hydration regimen before any prolonged, sweaty training session, and feel the benefits firsthand.
Keeping Hydrated During HYROX
Fluid loss and electrolyte balance depend on things like temperature and duration. How long you exercise and how hot things get.
The Rox Zone is your raceday hydration station. You’ll pass it between workout stations, making it a great place to stop and grab a drink. You can also carry your own bottle, which we’d definitely recommend keeping full with our sports electrolyte drink.
Rehydrating After HYROX
Most athletes finish HYROX dehydrated. Every sweaty puddle you’ve left behind needs to be replenished. And replacing lost fluids with electrolytes, not just water, is key to recovering properly.
If you’re training again soon or have another race coming up, you'll need a more aggressive rehydration strategy.
What’s The Best Electrolyte Drink For You
Rehydrating and replenishing electrolytes is about more than just drinking water. Our hydration tablets have been formulated to rehydrate 3x faster than water alone, while restoring your electrolyte balance.
Beyond electrolytes, our tablets contain a functional dose of glucose. This isn't just for flavour. Glucose activates the sodium-glucose co-transport system in the gut wall, essentially opening a channel that allows sodium and water to be absorbed more rapidly and effectively.
See how our sports tablets can help you max out your HYROX training and get you over the finish line quicker.
